Theory test support
Theory test support for reading difficulties, disabilities and health conditions
When you book your theory test, say if you have a reading difficulty, disability or health condition. The support available depends on what you need and, for some adjustments, the evidence you provide.

Independent guidance for car tests in England, Scotland and Wales. Northern Ireland has a separate DVA process.
Support listed by GOV.UK
- Hear the test through headphones in English or Welsh
- Extra time for the multiple-choice questions
- A member of staff to read the screen and record your answers
- A member of staff to reword non-technical parts of questions
- BSL, a lip speaker or a hearing loop for eligible learners
When evidence is required
GOV.UK says other support for reading difficulties requires proof. This can include an email, letter or report from an educational professional, medical professional, occupational therapist or an online dyslexia screening product.
DVSA decides the most suitable support and tells you what to do next. Other disabilities or health conditions should be discussed with DVSA before booking.
Do this before you pay
Work out which part of the test creates the barrier, gather any evidence that applies and make the support request during the booking process. Do not assume the test centre will be able to arrange everything when you arrive.
