ADHD and driving tests

ADHD and the driving test: support, instructions and test-day pressure

ADHD does not automatically mean you need the same support as somebody else. Start with the part of the test that creates the barrier: processing directions, information overload, communication or pressure.

Turn the condition into a clear request

  • Describe what happens when directions are given
  • Explain whether you need time to process information
  • Say whether short, clear communication would help
  • Explain any coping strategy you already use safely in lessons

What DVSA can consider

GOV.UK says the examiner can make adjustments for a learner's situation while the learner still has to meet the same driving standard. DVSA examiner guidance also tells examiners to take special needs into account and use a flexible approach where possible without undermining the test.

ADHD and the DVLA are a separate issue

The DVSA runs driving tests. The DVLA deals with driving licences and medical notifications. GOV.UK says learners do not usually need to tell DVLA about ADHD: the driving test assesses safe driving. If you have not taken your test and your doctor has told you that ADHD or medication affects your ability to drive safely, you must tell DVLA.

The rules for a full licence differ. Follow the current GOV.UK guidance linked below and ask your doctor if you are unsure.
